Every day seems to increase my thankfulness for Christian Science,...
Every day seems to increase my thankfulness for Christian Science, and makes me appreciate more its practical, helpful teaching, which I can apply to all my problems, big or little, domestic, social, and business. Christian Science makes religion a joyful service, not one of intimidation. It does not threaten with pains and penalties or rob one of a single legitimate pleasure. The word science used to seem to me unsuitable as applied to religion, but I now understand that no word could be more appropriate. Its meaning according to the dictionary is "exact knowledge," and it is that more exact knowledge of God, divine Principle, and of man in His image and likeness, which has brought harmony and happiness into my life in such large measure.
No words can ever adequately express my gratitude to Mrs. Eddy. Just as the word science is happy in the connection I have just mentioned, so is the title "Key to the Scriptures" applicable to Science and Health. To me it has converted the Bible, which I am ashamed to admit had become dry as dust through superficial reading and long neglect, into a book full of beautiful teaching. Now I read it daily and always gladly, and it is continually yielding fresh truths and more beautiful meanings, inspiring me with higher ideals of life and living, and helping me, in some measure at any rate, to demonstrate them in daily life.
It is five years since Christian Science came to me and my household, and we have had innumerable proofs of its power to heal physical troubles. In all this time I have been only two or three days away from business on account of sickness. During the last three years I have gone through a period of exceptional difficulty in my business affairs, and though at first I was tempted to believe that it would be impossible for me to cope with it, I was soon able to realize that divine Mind rules, governs, and supports us in all righteous effort. Since then I have had very little difficulty in carrying on my business, in spite of the fact that I am over threescore years of age and was preparing before the war, after a strenuous business life of more than forty years, to transfer some of my more active duties and enjoy more leisure. That I have been able to do so much, and that I feel perfectly "fit" and well, is beyond doubt due to Christian Science.
