Christian Science was first brought to my notice about...
Christian Science was first brought to my notice about thirteen years ago through the healing of my wife of acute lung trouble. While willing to admit that she had been healed, and that almost instantaneously, I was prone to believe the healing had come from some other source than divine Mind.
During the next few years my wife steadfastly endeavored to gain a clearer understanding of Christian Science through the study of the Bible, together with the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but I, not yet knowing the richness of the great treasures God had in store for me, simply lay idle. Then dawned that happy day in which our baby boy came to dwell with us, and as I now fully recognize, came through the tender protection of divine Love. When he was about a year and a half old, a change in my work necessitated our moving to a town some distance away, and soon after our arrival there the little fellow contracted a severe case of membranous croup. Being unaware of the fact that, as Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 494 of Science and Health, "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," I began to seek relief for him through material remedies.
My wife held firmly to the thought that Christian Science was the only remedy, but finally consented that I try the medicine I had purchased at the drug store. Here I learned my first important lesson in Christian Science, namely, "No man can serve two masters;" for almost immediately with the application of the medicine the little fellow became dangerously ill. At this juncture my wife declared she would have the assistance of a practitioner even if she had to go many miles for it, but she soon located one only a short distance from the hotel where we were stopping. Our hearts were filled with joy when, soon after the practitioner began to treat the boy, what seemed to be choking him was expelled from his throat and he began at once to improve. In a short time he was restored to perfect health, and to-day, although only four years old, he is able to make many of his own demonstrations.
