I wish to set down in words, as well as I can, my unbounded...

I wish to set down in words, as well as I can, my unbounded gratitude for Christian Science, that gift of God which was presented to me as a healing law about nine years ago, and which has continued to bless and benefit me in increasing measure since that time. I am a professional violinist. In the early part of 1907 I was seized, in the midst of a busy season, with some kind of rheumatic trouble. Together with this a severe inflammation developed in the left hand, amounting to an infection within the joint at the base of the thumb. For over three months daily visits were made to one of the best physicians in this city. I had all sorts of electric, X-ray, and drug treatments, and also submitted to an operation, but there was little improvement. The doctor told me that even though I should recover, I would be liable to a return of the trouble and my usefulness as a musician would be impaired.

I had a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which a friend had given me about a year before, and during the long nights when the pain kept me awake I would read it. One afternoon on leaving the doctor's office I decided it was useless to continue with him and resolved to go to a Christian Science practitioner. The next day I attended Sunday service in one of the Christian Science churches of Chicago, and was so uplifted by what was read there that my entire thought was changed. It seemed almost as if a voice whispered in my ear that I was surely going to be well and happy and whole like the people who were sitting around me. I went home, stripped the bandages from my hand, washed away the applications, and from that time commenced to improve.

Within a few days a lady telephoned to me that a new Christian Science church was being formed in this city, and she wanted to engage me to play, as they had no organ. I told her of my condition, but she assured me that I could take the engagement. I held this position for four years, until the congregation secured their own edifice and an organ. In two weeks my hand was completely restored, and I have not had a return of the trouble. Technical command of my instrument was also fully restored. Six months later, through reading Science and Health, I was also freed from the bondage of the cigarette habit, after having smoked for fifteen years.
