[Written for the Sentinel]

Bethlehem

Bethlehem, O Bethlehem,
We've journeyed long and far!
In our sad hearts new hopes arise,
In deep of night, our weary eyes
Search now the purple of thy skies
To find again thy Star!

The promised Star, O Bethlehem,
That hovers o'er our King!
A coronation from on high;
A pageant splendor from the sky;
A light the Wise are guided by
To where the angels sing.

They sing for us, O Bethlehem,
On this thy holy night!
They sing as little David sang
Where love and hope and peace to man,
The lilies of His presence, sprang
Along the starry light!

Bethlehem, O Bethlehem!
As princes did of yore
We cast our jewels at His feet,
Our scepters, crowns, our ointments sweet;
Renunciation make complete
To worship and adore!
