"Tell no man"
The novice in Christian Science finds no subject on earth so desirable to discuss as this beautiful and, to his consciousness, new truth. Usually his first joy is expressed by talking of the subject in season and out, to listeners willing and to listeners unwilling, to those who are friendly, indifferent, or antagonistic.
Jesus' healing were nearly always prefaced by a few words of teaching, and were sometimes concluded by the wise counsel to "tell no man." But the practitioner is not surprised to read that the one healed often fails to heed this advice. The writer does not forget how many, many demonstrations had to be made over again because of her constant talking to incredulous listeners, and especially does one of these experiences stand out in her memory. After Christian Science had been studied a short time, glasses that had seemed indispensable were laid aside. Joyously she told this to every one she knew, and presently, lacking sufficient understanding to protect herself, she had to return to the use of glasses and wear them for many months.
The wisdom of our Leader was as great as her love for humanity, and if we would only be obedient to her loving counsel, how many painful experiences we should avoid! Again and again we are told in Science and Health not to discuss symptoms and disease. "Look away from the body into Truth and Love, the Principle of all happiness, harmony, and immortality" (Science and Health, p. 261) is its teaching. Hence we should not discuss ailments past or present. We are healed of disease and sin by seeing these errors for what they are,—illusions, shadows cast by wrong thinking, by the belief in the power and reality of evil. We are not healed until our consciousness is changed, for we read on page 231 of Science and Health, "If God destroys not sin, sickness, and death, they are not destroyed in the mind of mortals, but seem to this so-called mind to be immortal."
