Fifteen years ago I went to a Christian Science practitioner...
Fifteen years ago I went to a Christian Science practitioner for help to overcome what seemed to be a chronic inherited appetite for liquor. I had had two shocks of paralysis and suffered from a throat trouble, but these seemed minor evils, with which I was willing to put up if could be freed from what to me was the besetting sin. I had been in the habit of using liquor from a very early age, having been left alone to earn a living as best I could when twelve years old, and two years later being employed in a hotel where the conditions were not such as to promote sobriety.
After being tossed about on the sea of what seemed to be a tempestuous life voyage, but always hungering after a life of peace and happiness, I was asked why I did not try Christian Science. I asked for treatment and was healed, but after fifteen months error suggested that I could have been healed in the orthodox church of which I had been a member, and as I liked the services and ritual I went back to it. I also went back in other ways; but the dream was of short duration and I awoke. Now that so many years have elapsed and all vestige of the false appetite has faded away, I can see the glistening peaks of the mountain top after the long fight, and realize in a degree what St. Paul meant when he said. "I have fought a good fight, . . . I have kept thy faith." The throat trouble has also been overcome.
In regard to the paralytic condition, I have not had any trouble for many years in walking long distances, riding a wheel, or doing any of my usual work. When very tired I still limp, but have been examined twice in the past four years by two different medical examiners for insurance and have passed without any question a very satisfactory examination. The last examiner remarked that he rarely found any one in such perfect physical condition as I was at my age, which was fifty-one at that time. In my work I quite frequently make one hundred and fifty to two hundred calls a day.
