Mayfield (Ky.) Messenger

In the Messenger is printed a sermon called "The Signs of Christ's Coming," in which the minister takes occasion to say some unkind and untruthful things about Christian Science. To say that Christian Science is neither Christian nor science is to imitate the carping critics of half a century and means nothing. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, says on page 123 of Science and Health:—"The term Christian Science was introduced by the author to designate the scientific system of divine healing. "The revelation consists of two parts: "1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and through the teachings of the Comforter, as promised by the Master.

"2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the socalled miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a dispensation now ended, but that they illustrated an everoperative divine Principle. The operation of this Principle indicates the eternality of the scientific order and continuity of being."

The minister says that Christian Science denies the atonement and asserts that every man is his own savior. Christian Science expressly affirms the doctrine of the atonement, and in a most helpful way illustrates Christ's reconciliation of men to God, going on to show that man comes forth from God, that he reflects God, Truth, Life, and Love, and thereby illustrates the atonement, or, as Mrs. Eddy puts it in Science and Health (p. 19), "the at-one-ment with God."
