About six years ago I underwent a surgical operation on the advice of a well known specialist. I had had long treatments and a previous operation for the same trouble, but to no purpose. The doctor assured me that in about twenty days I would be a well woman, but the case was more complicated than was at first supposed, and some days after the operation acute lung trouble set in. The cough and the hemorrhage burst the stitches of the wound, which had to be reopened, and the suffering was indescribable, as the heart was not in a condition for me to have an anesthetic administered. For two months I could not raise hand or foot, and with difficulty would glance at the Bible, which was a great comfort.

At length the doctor saw my mental suffering and at a risk allowed me to leave the hospital. Housekeeping was out of the question, as I could not stand, so we went to a pension. There in the evenings after dinner different topics were discussed, Christian Science among them. As I had inquired into many doctrines in the hope of knowing the Bible better, I at once asked what it was, and some very disparaging remarks were made. The evident lack of justice made me desire to know something about this teaching, and my husband said he would help me to do so when I was better. Five months later we went to our own home, and a few days afterward I obtained the address of a Christian Scientist and went to see her. The talk with her did not impress me, but she loaned me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I found it very good, especially the first chapter.

Some days afterward I returned the book, and was asked if I wished to buy a copy; but I said I was off for a holiday on account of my health and could not afford it. The Scientist however said I could pay for it when convenient, and I was so surprised at being so trusted by a stranger that I bought the book on those terms. I read it every day, and after three weeks stood up straight, cast off the surgical appliance, bathed in the sea, and disobeyed all the doctor's orders. The cough and the hemorrhage had gone, and a prenatal heart trouble began to disappear fast. When I got back home I had the measles, and was a little afraid, as the hemorrhage returned. My husband looked disturbed, but I told him not to worry, as it meant the end of the lung trouble. I was taken ill on a Friday, and on the following Monday was at my duties. Loss of memory was also overcome.
