When Christian Science was first brought to my notice...
When Christian Science was first brought to my notice about six years ago, I was in the depths of despair. I was blind both physically and mentally, and almost insane from pain coming from granulated eyelids, from which I had suffered for over ten years. I had undergone two operations and spent all my money in medical treatment. The physicians did all in their power to relieve me, but one of them told my cousin there was no cure for my case. Ulceration and inflammation had so ruined my sight that with one eye I could barely tell daylight from dark.
After one month's treatment in Christian Science I was able to read, write, and sew. Glasses which had been worn for ten years were taken off immediately at the practitioner's request, and I have never put them on since. I can read all kinds of print, thread small needles, and write page after page of letters to my children and friends. My healing was slow, for I was in such dense ignorance and darkness, and all was so different that it was difficult to grasp the meaning of the blessed word that makes free.
I had joined a church years before, but during the struggle for a living for myself and three small children, and the passing on of my husband and two little ones, to be told that a loving and merciful God was responsible for these things made me rebellious and bitter. I ceased attending church, closed the Bible, and tried to find peace and enjoyment in the way others were doing; but limitation, doubt, fear, and worry were my constant companions, and I often wondered what it was all for—what was the end of a life like that.
