Among the Churches
Current Notes
Toronto, Canada.—The new Christian Science church edifice at the corner of St. George Street and Lowther Avenue, just completed, was dedicated yesterday [July 9]. Ground was broken for the building in June, 1914, and the work went on during the early stages of the war to provide a means of livelihood for the many who were out of work. The Sunday school room was completed by New Year's, so that both church and Sunday school services were held there. On May 1, 1916, the amount of eighty-eight hundred dollars remained to be raised, but the managers resolved to open and dedicate the church on July 9 free of debt. During the dedicatory services announcement was made that sufficient funds had been contributed to meet every obligation, and that the edifice, which cost one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, was entirely free of debt.—Toronto Telegram.
New York State.—Just at this time, when so much is being said about distribution of our literature, I am prompted to tell how we disposed of ours. Many times the thought has presented itself, What can we, living out in the country, do with all these papers? We do not feel as if we could burn one of them. So we folded and tied each Sentinel and placed all of them in a large bag. Then my daughter and I started on an auto trip to a place three hundred miles away. As we went along we distributed our papers, leaving them in the rural boxes and giving them to those walking on the country road, and we were indeed sorry when the last one was gone. We are waiting for another opportunity to send some more on Love's message to those who are hungry for Christ.—Correspondence.
Hood River, Ore.—One of the most attractive buildings erected in Hood River for several years is that of First Church of Christ, Scientist, just completed, at the corner of Ninth and Eugene Streets, south of the Park Street School. The building is 50 by 58 feet in outside dimensions, and stands on a site that is 70 by 100 feet in size. The auditorium has a seating capacity of two hundred.—The Hood River News.
