[Written for the Sentinel]

In Peace Secure

Divinely sweet the calm Thy presence brings!
From out the sacred silence softly sings,

To strains that seem to float on visioned wings,
The heav'nly voice of praise.

No wasted past nor restless, storm-tossed fear,
Nor strange, mysterious future enters here,

For all is tranquil, free, serene, and clear;
Unerring law doth reign.

To Thee, O Love divine, to Thee we've turned;
The heart at last is soothed, for Thee it burned,

And wells with thanks to Thee for life discerned,—
Eternal life in Thee.
