Proofs of Divine Guidance

The writer is a master mechanic, and his work keeps him shut up in a textile factory all the year except for a two weeks' vacation in summer. For a number of years it has been his custom to take a long trolley trip in a section of the country new to him during part of his vacation season. One of these trips was through the Berkshires, and an incident which happened on the way, while he was engaged in sowing the seed of Truth, has revealed to him so unmistakably God's care and guidance that it seems well worth relating to fellow workers in the field.

The trip was planned to start at Hoosick Falls, N. Y., and end at Canaan, Conn., with stops at the principal cities on the way. Then a train was to be taken back to the starting-point. On looking over the railroad time-table, it was noted that the last train for the day would leave Canaan at seven in the evening, which was very convenient, as it was necessary for me to be home that night. While on the home-ward trip, after having left North Adams, a gentleman on the seat in front turned to me and asked if I was a Christian. Noticing that the speaker had on a clerical garb, I answered that I had been a student of Christian Science for fourteen years and had made some progress, having been able to prove its teachings for myself and others.

The clergyman then asked a number of questions about Mrs. Eddy and the doctrines of Christian Science. These I answered, and was thus able to correct many wrong impressions under which he was laboring. He stated that he was an evangelist, and that he had read Science and Health but was unable to accept many of its statements. I then asked him whether merely reading an arithmetic would give him much understanding of mathematics, and explained that in order to comprehend the teachings of Christian Science he would have to take up the study of its text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, together with the Bible.
