The summer of 1912 found my wife and myself in the deepest distress, for our son, then twenty-seven years of age, was suffering from a malady which had been pronounced incurable by several of the most eminent specialists of the state. At the same time our daughter, three years younger, was so ill that we feared for her life. As these were our only children, our despondency can better be imagined than described.
Through the blessed instrumentality of a faithful Christian Science practitioner both these cases were quickly and permanently healed. If these had been the only benefits which had come to us from this source, we should feel that our earthly lives would be all too short a time in which to express our sense of gratitude to God for these demonstrations of the power of divine Love, and our thankfulness to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her great discovery of Christian Science and its presentation to the world. But we have, in addition to these, received many other blessings, both physical and spiritual. I have been healed of a badly sprained ankle, of chronic catarrh of long standing, besides other ailments, and of the tobacco habit, after having been a heavy user of the weed for about forty years. My wife too has enjoyed many physical evidences of the beneficent effects of Christian Science.
We began the study of this teaching when we first sought help for our children, and our lives have undergone a great change for the better on that account. We have found such a wonderful unfolding of the teachings of the Scriptures, through the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and other writings of Mrs. Eddy, and through the Christian Science publications, that we feel as she did when she declared in the Preface of Science and Health (p. ix) that "though rejoicing in some progress," she still found herself "a willing disciple at the heavenly gate, waiting for the Mind of Christ."—John M. Bailey, Stoughton, Wis.
