The Lectures

Bicknell Young, who gave a lecture on Christian Science in Evans Hall, was introduced by Mrs. L. J. Plummer, who said:—

Christian Science is founded upon the fundamentals taught and practised by Christ Jesus, who came to redeem mankind from the bondage of sin and the blinding influence of ceremonial worship. He proclaimed no new truth. From Genesis to Matthew is a reiteration of the truth that God is the one God; that He is a God of love; that He heals our diseases; that sin, calamity, and suffering are results of disobedience to divine law; that sin has its origin in vain, unhallowed thought; and the Bible continually promises the highest spiritual and temporal blessings—all that makes life desirable—to those who have no other gods before Him.

Christ Jesus introduced Christianity, but he formulated neither doctrine nor creed. He healed the sick, cleansed the leper, cast out devils, restored sight to the blind, made the lame to walk, the dumb to speak, and triumphed over death. He bequeathed to all future generations the heritage of his glorious example. He said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." As stated in Science and Health (p. 473): "Few ... except his students understood in the least his teachings and their glorious proofs,—namely, that Life, Truth, and Love ... destroy all error, evil, disease, and death;" but Mrs. Eddy, our revered Leader, a woman of pure, exalted thought, dwelling "in the secret place of the most High," was able to give to the world so clean and simple an interpretation of Christ's teachings as to make it possible for all to understand.—Correspondence.
