The criticism that "Christian Science is neither Christian...
The Blackburn (England) Times
The criticism that "Christian Science is neither Christian nor scientific" is as old as the Christian Science movement, which nevertheless survives the scathing impeachment and indeed thrives vigorously. The foundation—stone of Christian Science is the allness of God, His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. For this reason Christian Scientists take the Bible promises literally. When the promise runs, "God is . . . a very present help in trouble," and when it is declared that God "healeth all thy diseases," the true Christian Scientist relies upon Him alone. Is this unchristian? The fact is that Christian Science is only primitive Christianity revived and applied to modern conditions, and all unbiased investigators will verify this.
Christian Science is not a modern invention of Mrs. Eddy; it is the Science of God and of His divine creation, the Science which Jesus revealed and demonstrated, which medieval scholasticism and ecclesiasticism almost blotted out, but which Mrs. Eddy discovered and demonstrated. The only science there is is the Science of reality, and God and His creation alone constitute reality. This judgment is confirmed on the one hand by the uncertainty and changeableness of so—called natural science, and on the other by the innumerable healings of sin and sickness which Christian Science is achieving in all parts of the world.
Then our critic is reported as saying, "It could be said in fairness to Christian Science that it had reasserted the old truth that mind could and should control the body." This attempt at fairness, however, completely misrepresents the position of the Christian Scientist. The belief that the human mind "could and should control the body" opens the door to hypnotism, suggestion, and other occult pretensions which, if believed in, are detrimental to human happiness and progress. They are in fact the very antithesis of Christian Science, which teaches that in the degree men "put off the old man," that is, the carnal or mortal mind, and put on the "mind of Christ," in that degree can sin and sickness be healed
