In the hope of encouraging others I send the following...
In the hope of encouraging others I send the following account of my first experience of healing in Christian Science. I was desperately ill with internal inflammation and a chronic bowel difficulty, and the last doctor I consulted said he could not do anything for me; but if the drug which he had prescribed alleviated my suffering, to continue to use it. His words, coupled with the alarming symptoms which I then had and the sense of desperate illness which was upon me, were a death—knell, and I felt that if the doctors could do nothing for me there was indeed no hope. One day shortly after this, while I was lying on the sofa, these words of the psalmist suddenly came to me: "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord." I marveled at this, and closing my eyes kept repeating the words, until I fell asleep. On awaking I felt a peace never known to me before.
The next day I read a short account of a lecture on Christian Science, and at the end of this account the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was mentioned; so I immediately wrote for a copy. The opening words of the Preface riveted my attention: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings," and with the exception of the time spent in eating and sleeping I continued ceaselessly to read. At the end of three days I was healed, and so convinced was I of the fact that I threw away all my mediciens. From that moment, nearly eleven years ago, divine Mind has been my all—sufficient healer.
While I am grateful beyond expression for the physical healing, the spiritual understanding fills me with even deeper gratitude. Through many and varied experiences God has been proved to me all sufficient, whether the need has been physical, mental, moral, or spiritual. I am especially grateful for the transformation in character that is going on every day, as the selfish, limited sense of love which possessed me before hearing of Christian Science is yielding to a broader, purer understanding of divine Love.
