For ten years before hearing of Christian Science I wore...

For ten years before hearing of Christian Science I wore glasses for headache. A trip to the oculist and a change of lenses was necessary every year, but each time the pain was only temporarily alleviated, and then the suffering would increase. The best oculists in Cleveland were consulted and did all they could, but at the end of the ninth year I was told there was only one lens stronger than the one I was using and after that nothing further could be done. This seemed a pretty hard sentence, as with the constant pain I had become very irritable and unhappy. I also suffered from rheumatism and chronic throat and bronchial trouble.

The healing of a friend, who was cured in four weeks of stomach disorder of many years' standing, led me to investigate Christian Science, and I was told that through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy I would surely receive aid. Lack and limitation seemed a big thing at that time, so I asked God to help me, for I wanted that book above everything else. Three days later I received from a relative a letter with five dollars in it. I hastened to buy the text—book and fairly hugged it all the way home, at the same time thanking God, for I knew this book was to teach me about Him.

As a child and young woman I had gone to church regularly, but what I was taught there did not satisfy, and for ten years I had not been to service, althought I always prayed to God as I then understood prayer. I read Science and Health every day, and was so happy in learning about Life, Truth, and Love that the thought of healing was pushed into the background. Three weeks from the day I began the study, while reading on page 253, "Do not believe in any supposed necessity for sin, disease, or death, knowing (as you ought to know) that God never requires obedience to a so—called material law, for no such law exists," I became conscious of the fact that I had not suffered pain in the head for three days, and this was to me a wonderful experience. I took off the glasses and have not worn them now for ten years. The rheumatism and bronchial trouble likewise disappeared. My husband also began to read Science and Health, but we waited two months before venturing to church. Then one Wednesday evening we slipped into a rear seat, and when the invitation was given to "unite in silent prayer, followed by the audible repetition of the Lord's Prayer," I was satisfied and felt that I wanted to go often.
