Daily Blessings

MRS. Eddy's opening words in the Preface of Science and Health, "To those learning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings," were a revelation to me. It gradually dawned upon me that to lean "on the sustaining infinite" was a present possibility. I knew that I had found the "pearl of great price," and after studying this sentence I continued to read, commencing at eight o'clock one Sabbath morning and not closing the book until eight o'clock in the evening. Is it to be wondered at that it seemed divinely natural to find myself healed the following day of a so-called incurable disease, which I was supposed to have inherited?

One afternoon, long before I knew anything about Christian Science, in jumping from a high carryall I struck my heel upon a stone, jarring the spine, and this resulted in my being confined to my room for months. Physicians agreed in the verdict that I would be crippled for life, if indeed I were able to survive the injury, which was extremely problematical. I had always been self-reliant, refusing assistance from any one who offered to help me; and not until I became helpless did it occur to me that God is "a very present help in trouble." I did not then understand that self-will, pride, and intolerance were the cause of my suffering. I realize now, however, that I was willing to trust God this mental state brought about the physical healing; but I did know that I was healed, and when I suddenly appeared at the table where my father was dinning alone, his astonishment was so great that he forgot to bid me welcome.

Among the many who have been healed of physical ailments by trusting in God, our beloved Leader alone succeeded in finding the rule for the Christ-healing, and she has given it to a waiting world. For this Science of healing, which differs from all other systems of mental healing in utilizing the divine Mind to the exclusion of all dependence upon the human mind for help, mankind owes her both homage and gratitude.
