One morning, while reaching up to a shelf for a bottle of toilet ammonia, I accidentally tipped the bottle over, and the ammonia poured down into my eyes and throat; but with the slight understanding I then had of Christian Science I treated myself, knowing and declaring that God is "a very present help in trouble." In a very few moments I was able to open my eyes and all the burning sensation had left my throat. I had breakfast with the family and there was not a trace of the accident. Shortly afterward I took a few Christian Science treatments and was healed of a trouble for which our doctor had said there was no cure unless I underwent an operation.
I am very grateful for these healings, and that Christian Science fulfils the promises in the Bible. Many people say, "When I am healed, then I will rejoice and be grateful," forgetting the Master's words to Thomas: "Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." In Christian Science we find it is necessary to deny the evidence of the senses, recognize and rejoice in God's ever-presence and in man's eternal likeness to God.
