About seven years ago what little I knew about Christian Science I ridiculed, as is the custom of some people who have never studied it. I seldom went to church, because I could not interest and content myself, but since coming into Science it has been a great pleasure to attend all the services. I soon learned that God is Life, Love, Truth, doing good in every way, always ready to help in time of trouble. I came to Christian Science for the physical healing, but that is a very small part of the good I have received, for although I did not know it, it was unhering me into a new life.
In lifting some heavy cases I strained myself, and this soon developed, according to physicians, into a bad case of lung trouble. I had to quit work and was under the care of a doctor for six weeks, but instead of getting better I grew worse. I was very weak, and the doctor told me I must leave this climate; but I fought against it vigorously, for I was full of fear. Two other doctors were consulted, and they told me I could live here just as well; but not being satisfied with the treatment which was proposed, I took up Christian Science on the advice of my uncle. I went to St. Louis on Wednesday morning, saw a Christian Science practitioner in the afternoon, went to church that night, and came back home the next day.
On Friday I went to my employer and told him I would be back Monday. The work was taken up under great difficulties, as my employer was full of fear ; he even went so far as to enforce some very strong rules against me. The rest of the employees were not Scientists either, so I had a great problem to work out; but I went at it in earnest, doing the same work as usual and gaining in weight and strength continually. I took absent treatment for a while, and later had treatment with a local practitioner. In a very short time I was feeling and looking better than ever before. In six months I was advanced as traveling salesman, and continued on the road for five and a half years for the same firm, making drives through the country in all kinds of weather.
