When Christian Science found me I was most miserable,...
When Christian Science found me I was most miserable, having been an invalid for eighteen years with a complication of diseases. Fifteen doctors had tried to relieve me of my sufferings but without avail, and each succeeding year found me getting worse, so that the outlook was dark indeed. My illness kept me from attending church, but that did not seem a hardship, particularly as I failed to see wherein the people who went were following the teachings of Jesus. I used to tell my mother that if I knew how to pray, God would heal me. My people were orthodox, and one dear brother was a minister, but although loving and kind he was never able to satisfy my desire to know how to pray aright.
The chapter on Prayer in Science and Health gave me that for which I had so long been looking,—the ability to realize the ever-presence of God in time of trouble. The following diseases have been healed through Christian Science treatment: stomach disorder, which caused terrible distress upon eating the simplest foods; lumbago, the pain from which caused many sleepless nights; influenza, which was a regular winter visitor; neuralgia, which accompanied every exposure to cold air; kidney trouble, which was so bad at times that it seemed almost impossible to stand the pain. My sufferings made me long for death, as I felt that God would forgive me for my sins after I had passed out, and relieve me from all my fears and sufferings.
When I read in Science and Health that my birthright was health, freedom from pain, dominion, I began to try to regain that inheritance, and I can truthfully say I have been healed of all the diseases before mentioned, and many more which did not seem so important. Self-pity, self-righteousness, unforgiveness, faultfinding, criticism, and hate, are some of the mental conditions which have been largely overcome. I have learned to love every one of God's creation, to know that God loves my neighbor just as well as He loves me, and that I must see the child God loves and not the counterfeit.
