When I first heard of Christian Science it was after years...
When I first heard of Christian Science it was after years of dependence on doctors and medicine; in fact I am quite sure there were not six months from my earliest infancy that I did not take medicine of some kind. As I passed from childhood to womanhood I suffered from so-called inherited diseases peculiar to women, and these were getting worse each year. I was told I would never be well and strong, or able to be on my feet without suffering. I also had kidney, liver, and stomach trouble. My heart was about the only organ in my body that was not said to be diseased. I had suffered from headache all my life, and had worn glasses about ten years for a structural defect and contracted muscles of the sight.
At this time, when I was so run down in general that the physician said I was on the verge of a complete nervous breakdown. I traveled from the Atlantic to the Pacific in the hope of getting my health in sunny California. I did, but not as I expected to get it. I had been here several months with no good results; in fact in some ways I was very much worse, my eyes in particular. The constant sunlight kept my headaching nearly all the time and I was not able to work at all. At last I was advised to try Christian Science, of which I knew nothing, but I was glad to try anything that promised relief.
Three days after my first treatment I laid off the glasses never to put them on again, although two of the best specialists in Philadelphia had told me I never would be able to go without them. The eyes were not entirely healed at that time, but the laying aside of the glasses made the work very much easier, the practitioner told me. In less than three weeks I was working, and I have not had to take any time off for ill health since. For eight years now I have not used a material remedy of any kind, but in every time of need have found God an ever-present help. I am able to walk, and can be on my feet all that is necessary to attend to my business properly.
