It was about seven years ago that I first heard of Christian Science...
It was about seven years ago that I first heard of Christian Science and became an adherent of this teaching. Like many others, I was led to it through suffering. After spending twenty years in Colorado I developed heart trouble, owing, as was believed, to the high altitude, and this condition became more and more serious despite the medical advice received. Finally a change of climate was recommended, and southern California deemed a desirable place of sojourn for me; but even there I went through serious struggles, and material remedies failed to bring relief.
At the recommendation of my son, who repeatedly called my attention to Christian Science, I began to read Science and Health, and behold, the inspiring statements of truth by our Leader wrought wonders in my behalf. With the help of a practitioner I became better acquainted with this teaching, and as I progressed in understanding, physical improvement was followed, after a rather long and assiduous study, by complete restoration. This experience by itself makes me feel most deeply indebted to Mrs. Eddy for the wonderful healing power which has been revealed in Christian Science.
That the healing was thorough may also be seen from the fact that I was able to survive what seemed the heaviest blow of my life,—the sudden passing away of my only son, a young man of twenty-one. Only Christian Science with its teaching of immortality made it possible for me to bear this great trial. It illumined my path and showed me the right way unto salvation. I earnestly sought comfort in the teaching of Christian Science and derived solace from the lectures which I heard from time to time. The study and application of the teachings of Christian Science daily brought me nearer to God, good, and through the power thereby conferred upon me I was able to overcome error in its various manifestations, such as worry, sin, and disease.
