With the earnest desire to help others who may be unable...
With the earnest desire to help others who may be unable to see the truth clearly, I want to tell what God has done for me through Christian Science. One day when I was closing the door of a safe my hand got caught and the nail of the thumb was broken and the thumb badly bruised. The shock was so severe that I lost consciousness. My son, a physician, feared a collapse, as my heart was very irregular, so called in another physician to avert if possible serious heart failure; but in spite of all the care given me I grew steadily worse. The heart was said to be enlarged and the kidneys in a bad condition, performing hardly any functional work, while chronic appendicitis and a paralyzed right side left me almost unable to walk.
The doctor, who came each day and oftentimes twice a day, tried to keep me comfortable by giving strong medicines, but life seemed worse than death and I longed for rest in any way. Another doctor, a specialist, told my people that I might live a few days, but hardly longer, as it was impossible for any one whose heart was in such a condition to live any length of time. I survived this, however, and a great deal of time was spent at a certain sanitarium.
Everything possible was done for me there, but without avail. It seemed to me, and to those about me, that I had all one human being could bear. When my eyesight failed, I was in despair and could see no ray of light, because I did not then know that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494). My son, always faithful in his care of me, was suddenly taken very ill, and thus my last prop was removed. There seemed no further use of living, for I knew that medical science could help us not at all. A friend who heard of my distress came to see me and told how she had been marvelously helped through Christian Science. As a last resort a practitioner was called, with the result that I became well within an hour. I have been in normal condition ever since.
