Materia medica pronounced my trouble a quick decline
Materia medica pronounced my trouble a quick decline. After a long night of mental depression, physical weakness, and a desire to die, Christian Science came to me in the way of treatment, and it is with gratitude and an aroused consciousness of the fruits of the Spirit that I send my testimony.
The first intimation I had of this quickening presence was in a desire to get well. A light had shined in the darkness, and I exclaimed: "I believe I will get well! Everything looks brighter!" At this time the physical condition showed no signs of being healed, but the peace remained, and after a number of days the physical symptoms began gradually to disappear. A good appetite took the place of a poor one, a reviving activity took the place of languor, and new interest took the place of loss of interest. One aggravating symptom seemed to hold tenaciously as Truth urged the healing, but it gradually lessened and after four months ceased to be. When I arose from my bed one morning and forgot to cough, my surprise and delight were so great that I wrote to my sister, who had given the absent treatment, to tell her of my complete recovery. Soon after this she invited me to her home and presented me with a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. I was hungering for righteousness, and eagerly read the book, meanwhile loving the author for making clear to us God's "wonderful works to the children of men." Since that time God has been my only physician and divine Mind my only medicine.
This healing took place over twenty-eight years ago and has remained permanent, but the gain has been a continuous one, and I know that true healing in Christian Science is found in working out one's own salvation. While I am learning to count my blessings, I also count my trials as "proofs of God's care" (Science and Health, p. 66) and opportunities for demonstration. Today I am in splendid mental and physical health, and the spiritual unfoldment continues. For several years I had been unable to sing, and it was a great joy to me when my voice recovered its strength and I could sing our beautiful hymns. I am in my fifty-fifth year, according to the senses, and feel younger and stronger than when I was twenty. Christian Science has enabled me to do and accomplish more than I ever thought possible. I am enjoying the blessed privilege which the Christian Science work affords one, in destroying error, healing the sick, and improving the morals of men and women.
