It is nearly eight years since I was led into Christian Science
It is nearly eight years since I was led into Christian Science. Ten years ago a severe attack of acute inflammation let me with weak lungs, and later tuberculosis developed, according to the diagnosis of a recognized specialist. I was under medical care for over two years, but at the end of that time had lost all faith in doctors and was willing to try something else. Finally I decided to call on a Christian Science practitioner whose name had been given to me by my brother. I did not go expecting to be helped, but went to satisfy myself, and at the same time to prove to my brother, who had persistently urged me to try it, that Christian Science could do nothing for me.
The half-hour's talk with the practitioner did not seem to bring any satisfaction, and I refused to accept treatment. On leaving the office the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was handed to me, and I was told to read it ; but inwardly I felt doubtful whether the book would be read or not. That evening after dinner, however, two chapters were read, and then it was that I received the degree of understanding which proved that Christian Science is true. Next morning I was at the practitioner's office before office hours, anxious to have treatment, and it was not long before I was well and strong.
Shortly before my first visit to this practitioner, the doctor who attended our little son and who was a partner of the physician who had my case, told my wife privately that I had but a year to live. Four years later I made application for life insurance, and after the customary physical examination the physician said, "You should get down on your knees right here and thank God, for your lungs have been affected but are now perfectly healed." His remarks did not surprise me, as I had then been in perfect health for over three years. I have received much other help through Christian Science. The tobacco habit of several years' standing left me overnight. During the day I had used the customary amount of tobacco, but the next morning the desire for it was entirely gone.
