A recent issue reports an evangelist as saying that "Christian Scientists can't pray at all, because they do away with atonement." Let the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, speak for itself: "We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Wayshower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death." Also: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love" (pp. 497, 1). An "effectual" prayer must be accompanied by works.

Jesus' prayers as found in the gospels were vital, bearing evidence of conscious unity or at-one-ment with the Father. Christian Science repeats this prayer of demonstration, bringing humanity to a realization that God is ever present, ever available good, and that man can become conscious of this here and now by turning away from the false testimony of material sense and apprehending that for which also he is "apprehended of Christ Jesus,"—indissoluble at-one-ment with the Father. If those who "preach the gospel" would obey the full command and "heal the sick," they would not waste time and effort in futile criticism. Christian Science rests on achievement.
