Since my childhood I was robbed of nearly all that would seem needful,—a mother's care, a cheerful home, and the advantage of a good education. Before I reached womanhood, I had the responsibility of raising three younger members of the family, and witnessed all sorts of domestic discords, moral, physical, and financial. As a result, these seeming conditions caused me to brood and fret myself into a general breakdown, physical and mental. I suffered from nervousness, stomach trouble, and sleeplessness, which held me in bondage for over fifteen years.
It was while I was undergoing some mental disturbance that my attention was attracted to Christian Science by a dear girl with whom I was employed at the time. Through her clear understanding of God's power, she had helped me to overcome that which was troubling me, and the consequence was, I wanted to know something of that power. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and spent much time in the perusal of this wonderful book. The understanding came rather slowly at first, but through the help of a Christian Science practitioner I soon began to see some of the truth that makes men free. Just in the degree that I gained a spiritual knowledge of God and man, my former troubles faded away into their native nothingness, and I began to be molded anew. Jesus said to Nicodemus, "Ye must be born again;" and just in the measure that I was willing to give up and let go of old false beliefs, I was being born again. I can now truthfully say that I am enjoying the best of health, and am perfectly contented, for I am gaining more and more each day of that spiritual good which is man's rightful heritage, and which does free man from all that is unlike God, good.
Being of Jewish parentage, I had never had a proper conception of Christ Jesus and his mission, but this has now been cleared up for me. I am sure that just as soon as the Jewish people learn who Jesus was and understand the Christ-idea which he presented, they will all come into their own. I am immeasurably grateful to God for giving to the world that noble character, Mrs. Eddy, who so unselfishly searched the Scriptures in order to give us a light by which we could realize the truths contained therein.
