Ons Godsdienstig Leven

In Ons Godsdienstig Leven I read with much pleasure the account of a meeting which a clergyman held with members of his church, and at which he gave a sympathetic explanation of Christian Science. May I ask for space in your paper to elucidate some points of the speaker's discourse?

The purpose of Christian Science is to teach men to know and obey God more fully; it is based on God, the Principle of all that exists, as the Scriptures, and particularly through Jesus, reveal Him. It teaches that the only way to happiness and peace is described in Jesus' words, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you;" also that the more harmonious material conditions which result from the study and application of Christian Science, are solely the effect of a changed attitude of mind, of a more intelligent obedience to the first commandment, which enjoins man in all his thoughts and acts to honor and serve God, good, only.

The Christian Scientists have no other Bible than the one that all Christians use. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as its name indicates, is used as a key to the Scriptures, and is not intended as a substitute for it. It seems to me that it is as self-evident that membership in a Christian Science church is not granted to persons who are still members of other denominations, as that one cannot belong at the same time to the Dutch Reformed church and to the Baptist church.
