Christmas, 1912, found me physically ill and utterly discouraged,...

Christmas, 1912, found me physically ill and utterly discouraged, though surrounded by every comfort that loving parents could provide; but as has so often been said, "man's extremity is God's opportunity." After years of prejudice and theological scruples, I at last determined to apply for help in Christian Science, to prove for myself whether it was the truth, with the result that I at once began to improve in health and despair gave place to hope.

During the year 1913, as spiritual understanding unfolded to me through the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," I gained health and strength hitherto unknown, and lost all fear that past ills could come back to torment me, as they had done under medical treatment. Prejudice against our dear Leader gave place to an ever increasing sense of gratitude and love, while I began to strive earnestly to put into practice the clearer understanding of the Bible which I was gaining through the study of our text-book.

From childhood it had been my custom and delight to surprise my mother and father each Christmas morning by singing Christmas songs, a custom discontinued in later years because of my ill health. Very early on Christmas morning, about a year after turning to Christian Science, I awakened, my heart filled with such gratitude and thankfulness that song seemed its only adequate expression. I went down to the piano, and starting with the simple German Christmas songs of childhood, I went on to the beautiful hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal, ending with the one by Mrs. Eddy, "Blest Christmas Morn," for this last seemed the most fitting expression of my happiness. To be awakened to this reminder of returned blessings pleased my parents, they said, more than any material gift I could have offered them.
