Christian Science is the restoration to human understanding...

The Truth Seeker

Christian Science is the restoration to human understanding of the divine Principle underlying the teachings and practice of Christ Jesus. It declares that God, good, is the Principle underlying all real being, the only Life, Truth, and intelligence of the universe, including man. When mankind thoroughly understand this Principle, they will be able to demonstrate it with the same unerring skill with which Jesus demonstrated it. The fact that, through the understanding of Christian Science, students of Mrs. Eddy's writings are repeating the works of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, proves beyond cavil that neither Christ Jesus nor his works are legendary, as our critic, Mr.—,implies in his letter published in a recent issue. By repeating the works of Jesus, Christian Science is performing a great service to mankind; it is entrenching the sacred Scriptures against the attacks of skepticism and doubt by again placing Christianity in the realm of demonstrable truth.

Christian Science acknowledges good wherever it is found, whether in literature, song, or sermon. It declares, however, that only through the application of the Science of Christianity can the long-lost art of Christian healing be practised as Christ Jesus practised it. The statement that Christian Science is largely superstition, does not hold, for this Science is understood only in the proportion that ignorance and superstition give place to understanding. Superstition implies ignorance and fear, while Christian Science is the law of Truth, dispelling the illusions of the senses and bringing out the true, the real sense of things. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free,"—free from fear, sin, disease, and death.

Neither does our critic's inference that Christian Science is suggestion, hold good. Suggestion is the action of one human mind upon another human mind; it is only another name for will-power, mesmerism, or hypnotism. Our critic's explanation cannot explain the fact that thousands of people are daily being healed simply by reading the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Surely, this is not the work of suggestion! If critics of Christian Science would learn what it is, they should be willing to go to its text-book and study it with the same sincerity as those desirous of learning mathematics turn to books on that subject and follow the rules laid down therein. "Christian Science is not an exception to the general rule, that there is no excellence without labor in a direct line" (Science and Health, p. 457).
