It is with unspeakable thankfulness to God, the giver of all...
It is with unspeakable thankfulness to God, the giver of all good, and with gratitude to our dearly beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her spiritual interpretation of the teachings of the Master, that I give this testimony of the many healings experienced, and the great happiness that has come to me through the reading of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
For thirty years I had been an almost constant sufferer from many physical ailments, the more serious of them being organic heart trouble, nervousness, stomach disorder, sleeplessness, asthma, brain trouble, and rheumatism in its varied forms. Besides all these I had a severe fall, which caused both external and internal injuries that partly paralyzed my left leg and arm. During the earlier years of my life and sufferings I was an active member of church and Sabbath school, earnestly striving to obey the divine command, "If ye love me, keep my commandments," and to live an honest, upright Christian life, doing unto others as I would that they should do unto me. The reading of God's Word in the home, around the family altar, was my daily duty, and every day I asked our heavenly Father to help me according to His many and oft-repeated promises; but months and years passed, and no help seemed to come to me from that source.
Eminent physicians in some of the largest Eastern cities had been consulted and had treated me for one or more of the troubles, at great expense to me. I was temporarily helped. Change of climate had been recommended for some of the ailments, and the extreme boundaries of the United States were visited, but no substantial benefit was obtained. The God whom I loved and trusted, and according to my understanding at that time had for years endeavored to serve, had seemingly deserted me. With the savings of years spent in a vain search for health, with my loved ones torn from me and my faith in God and His promises shattered, life seemed to me to be made up of one misfortune after another, and I determined to take the matter into my own hands and end it; but the knowledge that such an act would bring unmerited disgrace upon my family deterred me.
