Several years ago, while living in a mining-camp out on the Mohave Desert, I read some criticisms of Mrs. Eddy's writings. Up to that time I had never investigated her writings and had no thought of doing so, for I believed that I was already in possession of as clear an understanding of God's plan of salvation as it was possible for me to have this side of what I then believed heaven to be; but after reading these criticisms I thought it only fair to investigate for myself before passing judgment. I therefore borrowed the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, from a friend, and I had not read many pages before I became convinced of the truth of what I had read. When I grasped the thought that "all is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all" (Science and Health, p. 468), and that man as God's image and likeness is not material but spiritual, I was compelled to accept it, for divine Love bore witness to the truth unfolded, and my healing or conversion to Christian Science was practically instantaneous. From that hour Truth has been our only physician, for my dear wife accepted Christian Science at the same time. Through this correct understanding of God and man we have overcome what to mortal sense was a severe case of ptomaine poison, as well as bilious fever, rheumatism, and other false beliefs of mortal mind, including the tobacco habit.
I am truly thankful for the truth revealed in Christian Science, for its simplicity and completeness, and I am more than grateful to Mrs. Eddy for unfolding to this age the understanding of how to pray aright, how to be still and know that the nearest thing to man always is his divine Principle, Love, and that it is the "recognition of infinite Love which alone confers the healing power" (Science and Health, p. 366). We know that this truth of being is unfolding more and more each day in the consciousness of all sincere seekers after Truth, and that it will continue to unfold until we lose all sense of evil and know only good.
