Alertness versus Fear
The writer was healed in Christian Science, and one of the most stubborn conditions to yield was a morbid sense of fear. During the intervals he often wondered how one would be able to differentiate between fear and taking due thought for an impending danger, and the conclusion was reached that at the proper time, if necessary, it would be clearly shown. On page 128 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy speaks of the great help which Christian Science gives to business men. She says that an understanding of Christian Science "enhances their endurance and mental powers, enlarges their perception of character, gives them acuteness and comprehensiveness and an ability to exceed their ordinary capacity." This has been proved true by many.
It was my duty one morning to deposit as usual the weekly funds, and in order to do so I left home for the building where they are kept. When I was about half-way down the street, my attention was directed to two men who were standing at the curb apparently eying me very critically. Needless to say I took a good look at them likewise, and instantly it occurred to me that everything was not right; but after giving the matter a little more thought, I dismissed it from my mind.
After leaving building with the deposit, which among other things included a large bag of silver, I was led to look straight down the street, whereupon I saw the larger of the two men making a hasty entrance into the area-way of one of the residences. Crossing the street diagonally, I was again impelled to stand still and look ahead, and I saw the smaller of the two men walking slowly toward me, while right beside me was a man in mechanics' dress walking very slowly. For a moment a slight sense of confusion crept in and I made another attempt to walk down the street, but again the inward voice bade me retrace my steps and reenter the building. This I did, and at once telephoned to the police station to send an officer to escort me to the bank.
