In an article purporting to refute Christian Science the critic stated by means of comparison that we worship a "twofold power, one of good, the other of evil." The fact is, however, that Christian Science is based fundamentally and in every detail on the Old Testament admonition that the great Master reiterated with such force: "Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord." It knows no other God, no other cause or creator, no other Life, no other Love, no other Truth, no other physician than the God Christ Jesus revealed.

The critic stated that our attitude toward the suffering caused by the European war is one of "imperturbable equanimity," and he charges directly and indirectly that Christian Science develops inhumanity and heartlessness. On the contrary, while giving poise and control to its adherents even under the most trying circumstances, this teaching develops the highest sense of humanity,—kindness, tenderness, benevolence, compassion. This is being manifested toward the present conflict in many practical charities, including contributions of money totaling many thousands of dollars that are given by Christian Scientists in all walks of life for no other purpose than the relief of human suffering.

The fear that Christian Science would prevent material modes of treating disease is unwarranted, since Christian Science insists that all mankind be allowed the greatest liberty in their belief in and worship of God. In other words, we ask nothing more than to be let alone in our endeavor to follow the Master's commands to "preach the gospel" and "heal the sick," and we accord this privilege to all others.
