When the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
When the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was first presented to me, it was merely glanced through and laid aside. About five years later we bought a home, and upon opening a Sentinel which the previous occupant had left there, I read a testimony by a writer who had been healed of chronic bowel trouble through the reading of Science and Health. This was a complaint which had caused me great suffering for more than fifteen years, and having tried about everything materia medica had to offer without any lasting benefit, I was willing to try anything.
The idea of anybody being healed of disease through the reading of a book seemed absurd, but I nevertheless procured a copy of Science and Health from the public library, and before the chapter on Prayer was finished I knew that this was what I had always longed for. I had been reared religiously, but it meant nothing to me. Now I had found a God who is divine Love, divine intelligence, who never varies. I could not read fast enough, but wanted to know all that the book held for me at once, and after reading almost constantly for five days I was suddenly healed. That was nearly five years ago and the trouble has not returned. On Feb. 8, 1914, I awoke with severe pain in my head and eyes. I tried to use my understanding of Science, but the pain did not yield, and after suffering intensely for three days I telephoned to a practitioner for help, and was healed in ten minutes. This was my first absent treatment and I was overjoyed.
Words cannot express my gratitude for the help I have received through Christian Science. The Journal and the Sentinel are most welcome visitors in our home, and we find the testimonies in both periodicals very helpful. The Wednesday evening meetings are always a spiritual feast. I often wonder how I ever managed to get along before I began to study Christian Science. It is such a comfort in time of doubt to know that we can always depend on divine intelligence to straighten out our tangled affairs. I am deeply thankful to God for this wonderful truth, and grateful to Mrs. Eddy.—
