Less than four years ago I was very sick, and life was almost unbearable. From early childhood I had been so unhappy, so unfortunate, as it appeared to me, that I became convinced there was nothing in this world but sorrow and sickness, trials and tribulations. I had received no religious training whatever, knew no God, nothing but misfortunes and deceptions. My mother had passed on when I was only eight years of age, and the life which then followed was of such a nature that it left its marks on me, all of which I am learning to forget by the aid of Christian Science. Before I was twelve I had begun to smoke and chew tobacco, and continued this practice in excess up to my healing in Christian Science.
About seven years ago, after having lost my position, I became so disheartened that in sheer desperation I took to the use of intoxicating liquors and was fast becoming addicted to their permanent use. My general health was naturally being undermined all the time and I was going from bad to worse. The heart and stomach were seriously affected, according to the doctors, owing to the amount of liquor and tobacco consumed. Furthermore, from my early years I had suffered from chronic bowel trouble, and after having tried nearly every new physician with whom I came in contact, and nearly every suggestion regarding diet, I finally gave up in despair, as nothing helped me. This was the condition in which Christian Science found me, a veritable wreck; but now there remains no trace whatever of these diseased and discordant conditions, and the happiest and most tranquil days I have ever known are the present ones.
I am indeed thankful to God and grateful to Christian Science for my salvation, and also for the myriad blessings that have come to me and my dear ones during these few years in which this great Christ-teaching, as revealed and given to us by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, has been an active force in my life.
