True Spiritual Healing
The world today has already received wonderful benefits through Christian Science, and not the least of these is the revolutionized thought of the medical fraternity and all others engaged in the endeavor to relieve humanity of its suffering. An interesting article, widely published throughout the country, gives an account of a lecture by the professor of physiology at one of our large universities, in which he said that certain diseases were caused by fear or anger entertained. Of late years we frequently read or hear of some noted physician affirming the mental origin of disease. Many years ago Mrs. Eddy informed the world that the origin of all disease is wholly mental. On page 411 of Science and Health she says: "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin. Disease is always induced by a false sense mentally entertained, not destroyed. Disease is an image of thought externalized." Today some of the most advanced physicians accept this teaching in part, while they reject the healing power of God as taught and practised in Christian Science. They still attempt to heal through material means, substituting mental suggestion in the place of drugs, and failing to bring about a cure, they continue to classify certain diseases as incurable.
Mrs. Eddy first recognized the mental origin of the mortal body and of disease, then she perceived that disease could be healed through the power of divine Mind. She proved conclusively the correctness of her discovery by healing many cases of so-called incurable disease. In her writings she explains that it is through the realization of spiritual existence, of man's perfect existence as a spiritual idea of perfect infinite Mind, that true spiritual healing can be accomplished. It was through this spiritual realization that Mrs. Eddy did such remarkable healing work, and her followers can bring into their experiences success in healing sickness and sin only as they attain this spiritual realization in their own consciousness. Our Leader's teaching must be followed with exactness. It will not do to believe in the possibility of initiating the healing by the use of drugs or through any material means, nor can it be admitted that there is something real to be overcome, for such admissions, recognizing the existence of a power apart from infinite Mind, prevent the realization of Truth and its demonstration in the healing of disease. God being All, there is no matter, no other power, no other Mind.
Merely to repeat the absolute statements of Truth will not cause us to reach the spiritual realization of Truth; we must so live that our consciousness may become permeated with the understanding of God, infinite Spirit. Truth will then radiate its light into the darkened places of mortal mind where wrong thinking has had its abode, and thus dispel all that is unlike the glory of reality. The healer, when thus endowed with spiritual power by right thinking and right living, is able to realize for his patient that man is spiritual, created in God's own image; and thus reflecting the harmony and immortality bestowed upon the sons of God, he cures his patient, saves him from the destructive beliefs of wrong thinking and wrong living. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 185) Mrs. Eddy says: "Self-renunciation of all that constitutes a so-called material man, and the acknowledgment and achievement of his spiritual identity as the child of God, is Science that opens the very flood-gates of heaven; whence good flows into every avenue of being, cleansing mortals of all uncleanness, destroying all suffering, and demonstrating the true image and likeness. There is no other way under heaven whereby we can be saved, and man be clothed with might, majesty, and immortality."
