Detroit (Mich.) Times

An issue of recent date quotes Archdeacon—of Grand Rapids as asserting that "the synod lacks a great asset which Christian Scientists possess, namely, well-directed advertising." He adds, "I believe that this accounts, in a large measure, for the wonderful growth of Christian Science."

Granting the speaker the best of motives and intentions, these statements are not in accord with the facts, undoubtedly due to misinformation, and I ask permission to make some corrections for the benefit of your readers. Exception must be taken to the reference to Christian Scientists as newspaper advertisers, also to the exploitation of Christian Science through motion pictures. Notice of their church services, and of lectures on Christian Science given under the auspices of the various churches, are inserted in newspapers, but outside of these notices and reports of lectures, printed solely at the discretion of the newspaper themselves, Christian Scientists do not resort to newspaper publicity in any manner whatever, except to make necessary corrections of misrepresentations and misstatements. Christian Scientists seek recognition in no other way than by the fruits of their efforts, and it is by no other means that this religion, in a few short years, has had so remarkable a growth throughout the world.
