Your recent editorial entitled "Mental Healing as a Commercial Asset,"...

Flandreau (S. Dak.) Herald

Your recent editorial entitled "Mental Healing as a Commercial Asset," based on an item in the Journal of the American Medical Association, while possibly intended to be kindly as well as facetious, was so written as to give further currency to certain misapprehensions or misrepresentations of Christian Science.

Christian Science is not calculated to deceive its adherents or any one else regarding the nature of disease, injury, or any human experience. The practice of this Science involves two factors: first, a spiritual understanding of the absolute truth of being; secondly, the use of this perception, with the divine law and power which it makes known, for the betterment of human character and conditions.

A contract of insurance against accidental injuries to the human body is not made on the plane of absolute truth or reality, in which, as Jesus said, "the flesh profiteth nothing." On the contrary, such a contract would inevitably be understood by both its parties as having been made on the plane of human belief, in which precautions of one kind or another must be taken for the safety of what is presently useful. Its obligations should, of course, be measured accordingly.
