The Lectures

A lecture on Christian Science was delivered in the Masonic Hall by Clarence C. Eaton. William McLarty, the chairman, said that when he was asked to preside over that meeting of Christian Scientists, he wondered why, and he could find no reason really, except the knowledge that he was an inquirer after truth. Some years ago at Tacoma, in northern Queensland, he lieard the Rev. Mr. Drummond preach a sermon in a small Presbyterian church on the text, "What is a Christian?" He never forgot that sermon preached by the saintly Drummond, for he was saintly, and did a great deal of good in his generation. The preacher endeavored to show that a Christian was a believer in Christ, and said that if a man believed in Christ he would do as Christ did, and he would carry that belief into his life, and not only live it but defend it. He would never be ashamed of the man Christ Jesus.

Now, as an inquirer after truth, the chairman asked himself, What is Christian Science? His own mind told him it was Christian truth. Many were afraid of truth; they were afraid to acknowledge it. Nevertheless, it was the duty of all who called themselves Christians to acknowledge truth wherever they found it. A very large number of people in the world had sincerely believed, and did believe, that they had found truth in Christian Science. Christ said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." The chairman stated that he had a large number of friends among Christian Scientists, and he knew them to be sincere people, to be people who lived up to their faith, and always told others what good things their religion had done for them. To his mind, that was one of the best tests of Christian truth. Everything that made men's lives happier and better, Christians should support and wish Godspeed. He had known many wonderful cures through Christian Science. They stood forth undenied.
