Faithfulness in Service
In Science and Health we read, "Each successive stage of experience unfolds new views of divine goodness and love" (p. 66). As a Sunday school teacher, these words have been proven true, and I have found that one of the avenues of healing is the work of the Christian Science Sunday school. One day, when asked by the superintendent to take the beginners' class, the thought presented itself that I was not prepared (preparation having been made for older pupils), but immediately came the thought that Truth is the teacher, and Truth is always ready to meet our need.
In the class of six, five had never been to a Christian Science Sunday school before, but the thought soon began to unfold. Starting with the perfect Principle, God, one little boy said, "God is power," and it was then explained that when we give power to evil, we are breaking the first commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." A lad of six then said, "God is love," and it was easy to tell the children that this is the teaching of the Bible, and that as we are thinking good, we cannot think evil, and this is living with God, divine Love. When the children were asked how many of them had seen a candle, all had; and when asked what it does when lighted, a chorus of voices immediately responded, "It gives light." They were then told that every good thought is as a light, which shows us the right way to go.
The following Wednesday one of the little boys had a falling out with his brother. The mother, who was a student of Christian Science, held to the truth for herself, but all day the struggle seemingly went on. At night, however, when she tucked the little one in bed, preparatory to going to the Wednesday evening meeting, the boy had applied the truth as taught in Sunday school, for looking up he said, "Mother, my candle went out today, but it is lighted tonight."
