I give the following testimony as a proof that in Christian Science every material law can be overcome. A child was expected in our home about the middle of February. There were some slight complications which would have caused no anxiety had not my wife thoughtlessly overexerted herself, thus causing the conditions to become suddenly aggravated. This occurred early in January, and when the midwife, a good Scientist, saw this change, she told us that under the circumstances she would be obliged to consult with a physician and have the case examined, as is required by law. For some weeks my wife had been under the daily treatment of an experienced Christian Science practitioner, who advised us to abide by the law and call the physician, one of the best specialists in Berlin, without delay.
After careful examination this physician said the condition was very serious, because the kidneys were affected, and on a second examination he declared that there were yet other abnormal conditions. There was also swelling of the feet, so that my wife could not walk; and although this was a month before the child was expected, the physician said that she should be taken to the hospital the next day, if possible, and the child removed with instruments. My wife told him kindly that she did not wish to go to the hospital, also that she was assured the birth would be natural, since with God all things are possible, no matter how serious may be the outlook from a material point of view.
We decided to trust all to divine Love as our only physician, and we realized that time plays no part in God's universe. A few days after this the child was born, safe and sound. All went wonderfully, although the midwife had told me two hours before the birth that she could give me no hope that the child would live (I must explain here that we could not get the midwife we had engaged at first and were obliged to have one who was not a Scientist). There were many other things that occurred which at the time seemed unfavorable, but everything discordant was quickly overcome in Science.
