[Written for the Sentinel]

The Holy City

For the sake of the city that is to be,
Keep patient when things go wrong;
The very one who displeases thee
Shall join his breve to the song
Which is swelling into a jubilee
From the throats of a countless throng.

For the sake of the city that is to be,
Lay deep foundations of love,
That he who buildeth after thee
May rear strong walls above.
I can see it now rise splendidly,
The worth of the work to prove.

For the sake of the city that is to be,
Pave every street with truth,
That he whose feet shall follow thee
May therein find no ruth.
Plan them wide, as one who did foresee
Those who walk in perpetual youth.

For the sake of the city that is to be,
The city that is unseen,
Let light shine forth as 'tis given thee,
That all bless its ray serene.
God hasten the day of harmony
For the sake of the city terrene!
