Victoria, Australia.—It is now some few years since the Monitor, the Sentinel, and the Journal have, through the good offices and sympathy of the inspector-general of the penal establishments, been in circulation among the inmates of the penal institutions of the state, and these publications have been much sought after. Christian Science services are now held in various departments of the penitentiary at Pentridge and the jail at Melbourne. On April 16 last year, the first of these services was held in the jail, and on the 23d the first service was held in the Pentridge Stockade. The Christian Science church, having resolved to undertake this work, authorized the board to appoint a suitable number of students to accompany the readers on their mission of good will, and later, special readers were appointed. Permission having been readily obtained from the authorities, services were organized and started as indicated. The services variously take the form of the Sunday or Wednesday meeting, as may be deemed best by the readers, although most of them are held on some week-day.
