The Lectures
A very large audience assembled at the Manchester Town Hall to hear an address on Christian Science by Prof. Hermann S. Hering. Dr. Gilbert Fowler presided, and in his introduction said:—
The nineteenth century will probably always be known as an era of great developments in physical science. These developments have been accompanied by much questioning of old religious beliefs, but both scientific and religious thinkers are more and more becoming conscious of an underlying unity in all things. It is becoming clear that the true reconciliation of science and religion is not to be looked for in a denial of well-established facts on either side, but in the acquirement of a new point of view from which the facts may be regarded. This point of view is found in Christian Science.
I have been a keen student of physical science all my life, but Christian Science has given me what physical science could never give. It has given me an understanding of the real meaning of life itself, of what is meant by infinite, immutable Principle, Principle which is at once manifested through law and love. I have found in Christian Science a religion which is scientifically demonstrable, and which can be applied to all life's problems, from the smallest to the greatest. I have myself seen the healing of serious cases of sickness and disease through Christian Science.
