[Written for the Sentinel]

Desire

If God we could but understand
Instead of just believe,
And take from out Love's proffered hand,
What gems we might receive!

Did we but know His gentle sway
Destroys the power of sorrow,
We'd find His care of yesterday
Is just the same tomorrow.

Did we but always pray aright,
Our answer would be sure,
And all the way, though dark the night,
Our path would be secure.

When Love divine is understood
Instead of just believed,
Then Heav'n is here,—omniscient good,—
And Christ alone received!
