Before Christian Science was understood by the masses,...
The Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen
Before Christian Science was understood by the masses, those who followed the tenets of this new teaching were regarded as somewhat peculiar, and in some states they were even persecuted for following their system of healing; but today the world takes an entirely different view of this religion. The change in view–point has been brought about by the results which the general public have seen accomplished through Christian Science in the healing of both sickness and sin, and today those who believe in its teachings have the respect of those who do not. They themselves respect the beliefs of others. Christian Scientists are no longer regarded as fanatics. They obey the laws, and observe sanitary and quarantine regulations. In this state, their right to follow this particular system of healing has been recognized by statute, and they have been exempted from the medical laws.
Christian Scientists are not at war with the medical fraternity. They have no more use for the quack than has the licensed physician, and they believe that the man who wants a physician should get the best to be found, professionally and morally. Christian Science is primarily a religion; healing sickness is only a part of its tenets. The God of Christian Science is not afar off, but ever present, and Christian Science is an every–day religion. It emphasizes the good in life rather than the evil, which it looks upon as unreal. Today, those who do not agree with its teachings admit that its general purpose is to uplift humanity; that its followers are improved in mind and body through its influence, and carry it into their every–day lives.
