Christian Science came to my help at a time of great need,...
Christian Science came to my help at a time of great need, when my life seemed full of doubts and fears. Although a strict adherent of the Church of England, I longed to be able to prove the truth of my creed, and when constant adverse criticisms of Christian Science were appearing in the daily papers, I determined to hear the other side, having noticed the happy lives of some friends who belonged to that faith.
On attending a Wednesday evening meeting at First Church, London, I felt convinced of the power of Truth, and was healed of an hereditary fear of cold water, so that the next morning I was able to take a cold bath for the first time in my life. I continued this through the winter without experiencing the old attacks of illness. I also discontinued using glasses, though they had been ordered by a well-known specialist, who stated that my eyes had been strained through constant reading and advised me not to work by artificial light. Since then I have been able to study during the evening, after teaching all day, without any headache or other discomfort. The fear of lack which constantly haunted me before, has been overcome, and I have come to understand that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
Soon after beginning the study of Christian Science, I passed through the bitterest experience in my life, unexpectedly discovering that a most trusted friendship was false. The sense of grief and loss at first seemed overwhelming, but with one treatment from a practitioner I realized the joy of knowing something of eternal Love, and the trying circumstance proved a great blessing.
