The Lectures

Clarence W. Chadwick delivered a lecture on Christian Science to a large audience at the Keylor Grand Theater. Prof. W. R. Davis of Whitman College in introducing Mr. Chadwick said:—

"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good," is an exhortation as vital as it is difficult to obey. It points to a road that is hard to hit. It requires on the one hand, an open, clear mind, free from prejudice and the illegitimate bonds of tradition; it requires patience, sympathy, and sincerity. On the other hand, it demands firmness, decision, steadfastness, loyalty. To prove all things, holding fast nothing, is easy, and there are many in our day who do it. To refuse to test the truth of anything, holding doggedly that which is supposed to be good, is also convenient for multitudes of people. But neither is the way of successful, fruitful living. It is in the spirit of the better though more difficult way, I take it, that the Christian Scientists have invited me, a member of another faith, to introduce the speaker of the evening, and it is humbly, in the same spirit, that I have come for that purpose.—Walla Walla Union.
